Two Weeks in Thailand

3 Apr

In 2007 my mother and I traveled to Thailand for two weeks.  We booked a tour throughout the country with Gate 1 Travel.  I stopped by a Gate 1 booth at the Travel & Adventure Expo and was able to find part of our itinerary (it has been a bit tweeked since 2007).  The following is a sample Thailand itinerary:

Day 1:  Leave the USA

Day 2:  Arrive in Bangkok, Thailand.

Day 3:  (Bangkok)  City tour.  Visit temples including Wat Pho (with the giant reclining Buddha), Wat Arun, and the Grand Palace & Wat Prakeaw.

Day 4:  (Bangkok) Visit the floating market.

Day 5:  Travel to Chiang Mai.

Day 6: (Chiang Mai)  Spend day at Mae Sa Elephant Camp.  Visit markets.

Day 7: (Chiang Mai) Visit tribes including Mae Salong Hill tribe.

Day 8: (Chiang Rai)  Visit Sukhothai Historical Park.

Day 9: (Chiang Rai)  Visit Mae Sai Border Town & Golden Triangle.  You are able to see Cambodia and Burma.  Also, visit Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple).

Day 10: Travel to Phuket.

Day 11: (Phuket) Take a boat to Phang Nga Bay, Lawa Island, Koh Pannyi Sea Gypsy Island (a village built on stilts in the middle of the ocean – AMAZING), and Koh Ping Kan (“James Bond Island” – “The Man with the Golden Gun” was filmed there).

Day 12: (Phuket)  Take a speedboat to Phi Phi & Khai Islands (have you seen “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCaprio?  It was filmed there.  Absolutely AMAZING).

Day 13: (Phuket)  Spend day on beach. Rent some jet skis, shop, have fun and relax.

Day 14:  Return to Bangkok and then to USA.

Some other notes for Thailand travelers:

  • Shop!  The markets and malls are amazing!
  • Go to a nightclub.  The nightclubs in Bangkok were the best I have ever been to.
  • Eat lots and lots of Thai food.
  • Get Thai massages.  They are cheap and amazing.
  • Bring respectful clothing if you plan to visit temples.  In other words, bring pants or long skirts, shirts that cover your shoulders, scarfs, etc.
  • Ride in a Tuk Tuk (taxi).

Enjoy Thailand!  It is one of my favorite countries I have ever been to and I HIGHLY recommend it.

Universal Studios Orlando Ride Review

28 Mar

UNIVERSAL’S ISLANDS OF ADVENTURE:

  • Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey: Favorite ride of the weekend. Beware that at some points you will be upside down and there will be simulators.
  • Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man: Unfortunately this was closed while we were there, but it sounds great.
  • Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges: Fun. You will get soaked.
  • Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls: Very fun. I think they said it was a 60 or 75 foot drop. You keep thinking that the big drop is coming, but it sneaks up on you.
  • Pteranodon Flyers: Why do they only let kids and their parents on this ride? I so wish I could have done this ride!
  • Jurassic Park River Adventure: Amazing. Must do. About a 9 story drop.
  • Jurassic Park Discovery Center: Great to explore if you are a fan of the movies.
  • Exploring the shops in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Highly recommend even if you have not seen the movies. They did a great job.
  • Poseidon’s Fury: Great show!
  • The Cat in the Hat: Fun/cute ride even for adults.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS FLORIDA:

  • Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit: I wish I had enough guts for this roller coaster. It looks amazing.
  • Shrek 4-D: Cute.
  • TWISTER…Ride It Out: Fun experience.
  • Revenge of the Mummy: Favorite ride of Universal Studios Florida. MUST DO.
  • Disaster!: Hilarious show/adventure.
  • MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack: A lot more fun than you think. It seems like a kid’s ride, but it is quite fun.
  • The Simpsons Ride: This is a simulator ride. DO NOT DO IF YOU GET MOTION SICK EASILY. If you can handle simulator rides, this is really fun.
  • E.T. Adventure: Super cute!
  • Terminator 2: 3:D: Fun show.

Date Night in Georgetown (DC)

14 Feb

In honor of Valentine’s Day, I thought I would do a post about one of my favorite date areas in Washington, DC:  Georgetown.  There are so many great restaurants and activities in Georgetown.  Here is a typical Georgetown date itinerary for Matt and me:

1) Go shopping.  Georgetown has a lot of chain stores, as well as unique stores.  My personal favorite is Banana Republic on the corner of M Street & Wisconsin Avenue.

2) Go to dinner.  Last Friday Matt and I enjoyed Serendipity 3 (see pictures above).  The burger, sweet potato fries, tomato soup with gold fish, and, of course, the sundaes were delicious.  One thing to be mindful of is that Serendipity 3 in DC tends to attract a lot of children.  In other words, this is not a place for an intimate, classy night out.  If you want a more intimate restaurant and you like Tapas, I recommend Bodega on M Street.  If you would like a romantic splurge and you love Italian, definitely try Filomena on Wisconsin Avenue.   If it is summer and you want a celebratory night, I recommend Sequoia on the waterfront (I tend to do my birthdays there – see picture below).

3) Go to a movie at the AMC Loews Georgetown 14.  Or, if it is summer, get drinks on the waterfront.

4)  A unique, fun way to end the evening could be by getting your palms read.  There are a few palm readers/fortune tellers in Georgetown.
